Welcome to the forum about the Lake Hood Web Cam. We love your feedback, so feel free to post anything regarding the web cam here.

I ran into this during the early weeks of February and have it listed in my toolbar folder so it's one of the first sites to come up.
Fantastic vistas of the mountains in the background in contrast to the serenity of the waters.

I know there is a story behind the snow critter. Maybe Peggy from the AK Airmen's Office can enlighten us....

I really enjoy the webcam, and am disappointed when it goes down. Is there any possiblitity that it could become a live motion camera. Seeing the lake activity and listening to the tower is nearly as good as being back up there.

Well, the truth is that the camera is running motion video. We have a snapshot feature that grabs and uploads the images to the site. Unfortunatly, we don't have enough bandwidth so support a direct video feed for the general public, and we cant seem to find a good repeater/multi-cast service that will work for that camera (Toshiba IK-WB11A).

Regarding the downtime. The camera has been getting a bit flakey and needs to be power cycled more often. We are going to put a power/timer back on it so that it just gets power cycled every 30 min or so. Once we get that back on there, the time gaps between snapshots should be pretty tight.

Flaky cam eh? How old is it? If it's better than two or three years, then the electronics are probably getting set to kick the bucket.

I have been using this web cam for nearly two years, ever since my Granddaughter moved to Elmendorf where her husband is stationed. This is the best cam I have found in Alaska, especially in the Anchorage area. I check it each and every morning to see what the weather is doing. I love the snow and it's fascinating to watch how fast the snow piles up there, and even better when the lake freezes over. A few times, I have email a gal by the name of Amanda about the cam being down (I don't think she's there anymore). She was kind enough to reply right away and assure me the cam would be up and running as quickly as possible. We have always wanted to go to Alaska, but doubt we will ever make it.....this is one way I can see Alaska as it really is. I thank you for providing this service to anyone interested in Alaska.

Other web viewers commented on the "little critter." Here is the response from Nan Llewellyn a Board Member.

The mysterious object you saw on the webcam is actually a snowman, and this is the story of how he came to be:
The Airmen’s Association is currently raising money to build a much needed facility. A friend of mine committed to donating to our building fund if I would in turn build a snowman that he could see on our webcam. So, last night at the conclusion of the monthly Board of Directors meeting, several of the board members went outside and constructed the snowperson you see on the webcam. Unfortunately, the snow conditions were not very conducive to building a snowman, but we gave it our best shot.

We had a really good time; it’s not every day a bunch of grown-ups get to build a snowman. If it meant a donation to our building fund, then we were more than happy to oblige.

Again, thank you for taking an interest in what is happening at the Alaska Airmen’s Association. Ideally, next year we will make an even larger snowman. Keep watching.

Best Regards,
~ Nan Llewellyn

Remind me to tell y'all about the snow of '04 here on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Yes, Virginia, it snowed. On Christmas Eve.
